Formation: Klopp’s preferred formation in real life has been the 4-2-3-1. This allows him to both maintain his narrow shape and have up to four vertical threats when they win the ball. In game, I haven’t had much success in the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-2-3-1(2) because I feel like the players don’t seem to hunt in packs enough. There aren’t very many dynamic and aggressive CAM’s in the first one, and the players are too spread out in the second one. Now, I do realize that Serie A has a ton of guys like Insigne, Mertens, and Callejon to play with and that I could experiment a bit further with telling the wings to cut inside in the second variation, but I think I’ve found a way around that: the 4-4-1-1.
The 4-4-1-1 is the best formation for Gegenpressing for a few reasons:
1) Freeing the CM’s from the pivot/anchor role allows you to put a lot more players in a position to do what they’re good at. There are far more usable box to box midfielders within a reasonable price range for most of us than there are elite ball stoppers and “number 10’s”. Why waste a player like Naingollan, Enzo Perez, or Rakitic as a deep lying midfielder when they could be breaking up field and wreaking havoc.
This formation offers incredible flexibility in the CF and ST positions. Many players like Hazard, Reus, Hulk, and Lucas are incredibly dangerous in the CAM position, but there’s no good way to get cheap fifa coins. If you put them as a LF or RF, they get up to 8 chem in there. The ST position can be handled in a few different ways as well. The biggest thing you want to look for in this guy is Attack Positioning. These guys are going to get a lot of half chances if they have a good nose for the ball.
Most importantly, the 4-4-1-1 keeps everyone close. With Free Form tactics, narrow team width and a low passing slider, all of your players will generally stay within a 9-13m radius of one another. This makes combining natural when going forward, but more importantly allows you to hunt in packs.
---> Instructions and Custom Tactics
Speed: 70 (everyone finds the space when you win the ball) Passing: 30-35 (stays close to support, allows you to break pressure) Free Form (Gives the CM’s and outside backs license to go on)
Passing: 35 if using a target man, 45 if using a more mobile forward Crossing: 40 (if too high, the CM’s and CF will all bomb forward) Shooting: 80 (feels like players hunt rebounds and run on to layoffs better) Free form (interchanging naturally keeps everyone close)
Pressure: 90 (We want to play way upfield, keeps the wingbacks involved) Aggression: 70 (Ideally we’re trying to intercept, not dive in) Team width: 35 (Keeps things narrow and compact, outside backs have to provide width)
Offensively, we want to create an environment in which the central players are all interchanging and playing off of each other, and the wide men are consistently threatening the final third. When you lose the ball, it’s important that you get bodies in to press right away and close down the gaps both vertically and horizontally.
Defensively, we want to funnel the ball to the middle so that the opposing team over commits. Unlike our 4-4-1-1, which is designed to cover for cm’s bombing forward, most formations have dedicated CDM’s that they rely on to shield the defenders. If you let them play on the wing, you risk getting beaten 1v1 and allowing an easy (and frustrating) chance. I like to set it up so that when we have to sit back in our banks of 4, I can pressure from behind with my CF and force an interception.
That said, our general strategy is to have almost everyone on Aggressive Interceptions to hunt in packs, amplify the versatility of our central players, and pressure from the fifa ultimate team coins. Here’s exactly how I set it up. Unless otherwise noted everyone is on Aggressive interceptions.
ST: Stay Central, Balanced runs, cut passing lanes. (Lots of interplay and quick exchanges) CF: Balanced runs, Press defenders. (Has to be a spark plug that starts the hunt) RM/LM: Get in behind, Balanced defense. (Go on lads, pin back the ears but be ready to work back if the wingback overlaps) CM: Balanced across the board (They NEED to go forward and cover equally) CB1: Join the attack. (Keeps him up to cut off the quick counter/marks the CAM) CB2: Conservative interceptions (Prevents him from overcommiting to aerial balls) RB/LB: Balanced everything.
